Pink with Laughter

Category: Blog - July 14, 2010

First of all, if you aren’t getting “Little Pink Book” in your inbox every day, subscribe now. This daily newsletter from Pink Magazine (yes, pink – don’t worry, they can explain) delivers relevant, insightful information every day aimed at a new generation of women who value their careers – and living rich and fulfilling lives.

Today’s topic – laughter and leadership – got me thinking. The one quality that’s transcended every good job I’ve had – from waiting tables throughout school to my professional career – is laughter and camaraderie. Working alongside co-workers and leaders who can laugh with one another, especially during rocky patches, and laugh at themselves from time to time is critical to building lasting relationships in the workplace.

In her article, “Humor at Work,” Leigh Anne Jasheway-Bryant says more women are incorporating humor into their leadership style. It’s a skill, she says, “that can boost creativity and productivity, help communicate difficult messages, reduce hostility and improve morale.”

Laughter can neutralize a situation. It makes us human. And it makes coming to work every day a lot more fun.

Take a minute to listen to the soundtrack of your workplace, your meetings, your cube or office. Do you hear laughter? How could you use humor to break through a challenging situation with a co-worker? How could you incorporate humor into your next new business presentation? I’d love to hear about it.
